The idea that the world is warming and that climate change is negatively affecting the lives of the world population is under the spotlight as the UN Climate Change Conference takes place in Cancun, Mexico until December 10th 2010. Anyone with a little common sense and logic could not deny that we are drowning in a monumental and indestructible mountain of discarded packaging. A tax on plastic Liddling film was implemented in South Africa seven years ago in an effort to eliminate the profusion of plastic flying along in the wind and attaching itself to fences and poles. It was commonly known as our "National Flower". This initiative has served to encourage shoppers to carry re useable cloth bags with them to the stores and supermarkets. Yet there are even thinner plastic bags within the stores that are used to package loose vegetables and fruit. Earth Resource maintains that plastic bags constitute up to 30% of the landfills. Unless they are biodegradable, it will take up to 1000 years before they disappear. Even more disturbing is the food packaging paper suppliers of fresh meat and fish. These products are generally presented to us on a Styrofoam platter which is then double wrapped in plastic film. Once we return home the packaging is removed and discarded with the rest of our refuse. Unless we choose to make the effort to recycle ourselves, all of this petroleum based food packaging poucheswill end up on the landfill and will never breakdown and forever continue to emit toxic gasses.
