Hi my name is Tony and I'm a 38yr old male from Australia When did you find out that you have ACC? How old? I found out I had ACC when I was 18 after suffering from blackouts from being overly stressed. But never was I told directly that I had it. The neaurologist couldn't explain it properly, until I went for an MRI two yrs ago when I was still suffering from the blackouts and major confussion.
What did you struggle with in school? I struggled with mostly everything to do with school, I had major learning problems with mathmatics and lituracy skills and no teacher during my school yrs gave me the time nor day to help with additional learning and also socialising was a major problem, so I basically went through school sitting by myself in a corner. I also suffered from a lot of confussion which to this day is still playing a big part in my life.
What did you enjoy most and do well at in school? I had way to may learning difficulties to enjoy it
Did you struggle with social skills in school? you bet I did.....
Did you make friends easily in school? I did have a few friends but they didn't last long...
Do you still struggle today with social skills as an adult? I still stuggle immensily... but I have had a friend for 10yrs now which has been a godsend to me.
Did you attend a mainstream classroom? Yes, but never enjoyed it
Did you receive Special Ed resource help? No the teachers couldn't understand I had a major problem and just left it at that. I never recieved any help from special Ed tutors to help with my low grades. Can you ride a bike and drive a car?
Did you attend college? Did you get a degree? I did attend college but still struggled with all things, maths english, history, art, socializing Do you have a job and if so what do you do? No I couldn't hold a job for more than a couple of weeks, so I am on disability pension, due to all the problems I am having especially confussion, where I can't tell the difference between a pen and a biro, or a cup and a mug. The problem I suffer the most and have all my life is confussion, I can't tell the difference between left and right or simple evryday things. I know it sounds silly not telling the difference betweeen a pen and a biro, but when I need a pen and find a biro I know it does the same thing but my mind doesn't accept that so I don't pick it up and use it
Are you married? Single? Single and I guess I will stay Single
Do you have children? no
How does ACC affect you today as an adult? It affects me greatly, I have read about ACC and what is all about but have not come across anyone else who is suffering some of the other things the same as I am, so it makes me wonder if there is anything else wrong with my brain, I also have another part of the brain missing and thats the bottom back right hand side and Doctors say it aslo never fully developed since birth and still doctors won't say a thing. When I enquired to my neaurlogist about my problems all he told me a little about ACC, to accept I have ACC and deal with it and to stop asking questions.
What do you enjoy doing the most in life? What are you passionate about? Well I can't do much so I don't really enjoy anything.... I used to be a gamer having a Ps3, but in the past couple of yrs it seems I am getting worse at trying to figure out how to play even the simplest of games.
NO ONE WILL TELL ME ANYTHING... I NEED HELP TO KNOW WHAT EXACTLY IS WRONG.... I AM SUFFERING MAJOR DEPRESSION BECUSE OF IT ALL....

To add a bit more, I am not permitted to cook, just incase I get stressed and have another blackout from being too stressed about if I'm doing it right, last time I cooked I had a blackout and put a remote control in the oven thinking it was a sausage roll and put the kettle in the freezer thinking I turned it on.
I have tried relaxation, meditation and everything else to try and overcome even the slightest amount of stress but my brain will not let the information sink in and stay there as with everything else I have tried to learn in my life.
Confussion to me is the biggest threat in my life, and the blackouts are more in the way of time lapses. I have found myself on numerous occasions where I found myself down the street and can't remember leaving the house, I am not permitted to drive bacause of that reason, incase I hop in the car and find myself in a serious accident involving not just me but an inncent bystander or another car. Time lapses can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hrs.....

Hello! Thank you for this. It's great to read about other people's experiences. The range of symptoms seems to be very broad - some people are good at math, some are not. Some are good at reading, some are not. Some make friends easily, some do not. It's great to see that many ACCers can accomplish so much!
I am the father of a 9-month old with complete ACC, diagnosed in utero. He is fully functional and has thus far met all his developmental milestones. Before I ask a question of all of you, I would like to give a little background info on myself: I have done a lot of research on ACC, and I am finding that many of the common symptoms are exact descriptions of what I went through in adolescence and am still going through. Given this observation, and the fact that my son was born this way (I also have Tourettes), I often wonder if I have ACC. Of course I can never know, unless I get an MRI, which I will not do unless I have to because, either way, my life will go on, diagnosis or not. I overcame a lot of bullying, poor social interaction, and poor academic performance in high school. But now I am a high school English teacher at a college prep school, and I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach some of the brightest kids imaginable. In a strange turn of events, my eccentricities and less-than-perfect ability to structure my life has worked very well for me in the classroom. If I ever find out that I have ACC, it will not change anything for me, other than to confirm that one can be successful and happy and purposeful even with the condition. Sorry for the long detour - back to my son. Here's my question for all of you adults with ACC: If there is one thing that you wished your parents, teacher's, coaches, or any authority figure would have done or taught you that would've helped get you through some tough times, what would it be? I want my son to unlock his full potential and not have his self-esteem ruined or opportunities shut to him because he gets frustrated with himself. Thanks again!

When did you find out that you have ACC?
When I was around five I was diagnosed with ACC in the USA. I was living in the UK at the time with my American family and couldn't talk, swallow or eat properly since I was born. I also was behind other kids despite doing average on IQ tests given to me. My parents were concerned so they had me tested by doctors in the UK. The NHS believed I had epilepsy. My mom wanted a second opinion so I took an MRI exam in New York City which revealed I had Agensis of the Corpus Callosum and not epilepsy.
What did you struggle with in school?
I struggled in classes was lucky to Bs and had to be in special ed courses while I was in the British system. My first school was my favorite as it was a very small school of 30 students who all had serious learning disabilities so we all got along.
When I graduated my parents choose another school which was small but did not necessarily have kids with learning disabilities. It focused on small classroom learning and had kids from the UK, North Africa, Middle East and Far East Asia. I was the only American in my grade. As others have mentioned here I was an easy target for being the butt of jokes and I was gullible. To make matters worse I became a teenager just before 9/11 and used to get into fights with Middle-Eastern/British students at my school because of my American identity and lack of being able to understand political differences. When I passed my GCSE's I immediately transferred to an American Community School hoping that would help but I still was made an easy target because other students couldn't believe how "stupid" I was. While there I never made close friends but was able to go to parties as people knew I was unpredictable and a interesting drunk (I started drinking in second school.)
What did you enjoy most and do well at in school? I enjoyed talking about history and using my confusing nature to piss off other people who couldn't get me.
Did you struggle with social skills in school? I was never popular so popular kids like to prank me and take advantage of lack social skills. The nerds and geeks didn't like me because they though I was stupid as I couldn't understand computer, electronics or play video game well. Another problem I had is I would spend my entire summers in the Midwest with my dad family and the school year and because I not ethnically British I had to get used to a hybrid culture of slang and culture from kids in the USA and UK. To make matters worse my mother was from on the Spanish Islands in the Caribean and because I went there every year and had even more cultural social cues that confused me.
Did you make friends easily in school? I enjoyed goofing off with the worst students in my grade and buddies from my old school as I got to drink and smoke with them which was easier to do then figure out electronics and sports.
Do you still struggle today with social skills as an adult? Still do in public, in private and at my job. It doesn't get better because a the real world doesn't give a shit that you have learning disability.
Did you attend a mainstream classroom? In Secondary School and some in my American School. I did some intermediate classes in Science and Math but I struggled as I could never remember an entire formula or often black out a number of times for a second and had to start again.
Did you receive Special Ed resource help? To be honest it just helped me graduate by giving me extra time on exams and more hours spend on how to pass school and tricking a college into thinking your a contribution. I had four jobs in the last few years and my Special Ed was worthless for them.
Can you ride a bike and drive a car?
After a lot of training I was able to learn it and can still do it to this day. I have an American Midwestern State License (Rural Tests are Easier) but I occasionally get in trouble because I forget to watch my speedometer or stop signs. Traffic Cops are usually are uncomfortable with me because of my international background and I often don't understand the questions. Even worse I mess up the information because I forget and they get really pissed off with me.
Did you attend college? Did you get a degree?
I attended a small religious liberal arts college in the Midwest that my cousin had gone to so the family could keep a close eye on me. It was interesting as the Born-Agains were nice people but they admitted they were "uncomfortable" around me because I was not into religion and because my condition made me a difficult roommate. The fun part of college was the parties where I could drink heavily, not fun was the MIP and angry cops. While I hung around people such as frat kids or roommates I never really made great friendships because of a lack of a deep connections beyond booze or interest in some political history. I did get into shooting long guns while I was at college after I interned at a Gun Club and did some hunting with relatives. I don't own any but I like looking at the different styles and going hunting fishing in the Midwest or UK.
Do you have a job and if so what do you do? I work Security (still don't know how I got into the gig lol) at a Resort in the Upper Midwest. Before that I did retail/mail clerk jobs and some phone survey work. As I said before my Special Ed education and college did not prepare me at all for the real world. I have to learn through trial and error and make sure I don't piss of my supervisor too much when my ACC kicks in.
Are you married? Single? I married my college sweetheart who happened to be from the same state as my family and was the reason for me staying in the USA and not at home with my parents like some kids with serious learning disabilities. She is normal so we make a interesting pair.
Do you have children? No, I wouldn't care but my wife wants to wait to make sure we financially ready and that my disability won't be a problem.
How does ACC affect you today as an adult? Occasionally I make mistakes at work because I forget random details. As clerk I couldn't stock or count the bank without taking time which is not good for a minimum wage job which many normal people are seeking in the recession. The recession has meant that I just thankful for what I have and I hope everyday my ACC doesn't get me fired. If I do get fired I'm not sure about disability benefits as I live in a Republican County where people look down heavily on those with receiving assistance. I don't want to go back to the UK either because it is too expensive, the job situation is better and I like chance to do stupid redneck things here.
What do you enjoy doing the most in life?
Craft beer and Craft liquor. Shooting targets and animals. Kayaking the lake outside my house. Four Wheeling with my in laws. Watching in-laws rage against the current administration after watching and then seeing there faces when I tell them I'm going to quit my job and go on disability benefits. I guess I like extreme people of both sides of politics as with ACC I can't understand subtle behavior or views so I find extreme people relaxing as I know where they stand and don't feel like I'm going to be tricked like in school. I do keep in touch with people from my first school as we like to play video games online (we suck as much as each other), listen to heavy rock and drink alcohol.
